Drupal for RPG Websites

Technical Details

Well, this is the second time I've run through the Drupal install for the RPG Nexxus properties, and I have to say I'm doubly impressed.

In case you missed it, I installed it once, had it working on three sites, then corrupted and lost the database through my own stupidity. Wasn't till I needed it that I found out the backup hadn't been running. More specifically, I had never added that database name to the list to be backed up. You'd better believe it's there now.

Anyway, Drupal out of the box doesn't look like much ... typical phpnuke site without a lot of the bells and whistles. But it's starting to shine with some of the plug-in modules. I've got no less than seven plugins on the site now and still adding. Each of the plugins has gone in without a hitch and most even survived the database destruction and re-creation without so much as blinking. That's super.

I still need to do some tweaking -- Hearth, for example, needs a custom home page -- but it's going in very quickly. I'm hoping to get Tales over soon and we can start using the interactive writing (book), word of the day and glossary features.

At any rate, Drupal is currently recommended in my book if you're an experienced web host and programmer. It's not for the faint of heart, but it is a powerful resource to build on.

Drupal is a fantastic CMS. It isn't just the modules that make it create, it is the ethos, and the ability to make the site look unlike a drupal site. theonion runs on drupal, for example. Alleria now runs on a modified version of drupal, and the tools are tremendous! Glossary, epublish, Taxonomy Access, Organic Groups, flexiblock....all fantastic.

Theming is pretty simple too.

If only they had a banner exchange app, I'd be all set. Well, that and if I had more time to customize the sites the way I like them Regular Smiley

Hmmm, i'm sure they do have a banner exchange app, or at least one that could be modified to act as one. Which version of drupal are you using, 4.6.6 or 4.7? I take it you don't mean banner.module like app, but something different?

I'm convinced that if we applied drupal to planet earth...the planet would descend into world peace.

I can run ads on the sites just fine ... I'm looking for a banner exchange where folks sign up for an account, post their button and get other buttons posted on their sites. I'm sure that banner.module can be converted to do this, but I haven't the time to convert it. At least not yet.

And it breaks miserably when you have file downloads set to 'private' ... which would also need hacked. Someday.
