Reviews and Advice

This is for either an Amber Quill or a Golden Wyrm. The site was previously submitted for a simple review a couple of months ago, and has since then been updated to a new look, using in part the comments we received at this very functional and interesting site Regular Smiley We are now using the portal software of joomla for the information part of our site, and PHP for the forums.

Site: Tazlure - www.tazlure.nl
Tazlure is one of the bigger games in our niche of the PBP market, while maintaining quality standards for staff and players. We've reached out to other games in the spirit of cooperation and are currently part of www.dragonmusenetwork.com.

The site contains both static information and of course, inevitably, forums (with archives for old threads, though sadly the threads from our old ezboard incarnation are lost, and so it doesn't date back further than 2003). In addition to that we do have a chatroom, but that is not used for anything other than OOC contacts and public logs are not kept.

When is a site ever truely finished? There are a million things we still want to implement (including the art, which has been delayed to a later date because we've made some specific requests from our own local artists), but right now I think we've come a long way and are ready for a review as is Regular Smiley

Looks like there went something wrong with the linking, so for ease of use:

I like your color scheme. It's very soothing. The rollovers make it a little hard to read, though. Increase the contrast, more whitish over brown.

There is NO SUCH WORD AS orientated. Sorry, one of my pet peeves. That and 'utilize.' It's 'oriented' and 'use.' Ten-dollar words do not make you look smart. They make you look like you're trying to look smart, which immediately presumes you're dumb. I don't think you are, so don't use them. Plain old five-cent words are terrific when placed correctly (see http://www.rpgtales.com for examples).

I do rather like the way your site is organized. I can find everything VERY easily (other admins of online-play sites take notice).

I don't play online myself, so I won't say much about the style of play, but the framework is extremely well done. Nice job.

There is actually such a word as orientated, but perhaps not in English Regular Wink Tazlure is a Dutch game, and it is changing every day, which means every day there is a 50% chance for a mistake. In between translation and spellchecking some things get messed up too. I'm sure we'll get around to fixing it in our next round of spell checks Regular Big Grin

Thanks for the support Effie!

I like the clean look and the colour scheme as well. My only two complaints would be that the footer is not incorporated better into the page layout, and that the content area seems rather small and poorly used, with a lot of information being shown in pop-up windows instead. If you saved some screen estate on the top banner and the footer, you could show a lot of the actual info within the page itself.

I've updated two links on the frontpage because apparantly many new users were having trouble locating the boards. So instead of community it now says boards, plus I added the same link in the side menu stating start playing. I hope that makes it more obvious.

I agree that the current template has a small reading area, but that is because its configured for smaller computer screens than I usually have. This in consideration to a majority of our users. It is definately on my list for future updates though, to see if we can improve on that.

As for pop ups... that is done deliberately for ease of use while posting with lots of crossreferences. This site after all is designed not primarily for reading but for using it in a game.

I've also discovered that some of the public moderator information is missing (such as how to apply, what we expect etc.) so that will be re-added in the coming days. Not really important information for those that judge the site, but I need it for the game Regular Wink

The Good:

  • This sort of thing makes my day; the site is pretty, nothing but sheer beautiful styling. We’ll see how the navigation fairs, but this is wonderbar.
  • The “Introduction” page’s next and previous buttons…You are a person after my own heart. For years I’ve been asking people to make their navigation –especially through rules and background content— easier to cope with. There’s a lot of content, and by splitting it up you enhance the ability to get people read the intro and rules and stick about for the play-time. You get Special “Remmy’s Kudos Points” for that.
  • The boards…Fandamnedtastic! That’s all I have to say about them.

The Bad:

  • I can’t stop praising the site; the only bad thing is…How many people you’re bound to get playing the game –to the point of it being difficult to manage. Congrats.

The Ugly:

  • ” Mundane shopping
Magdalena spend the entire tradingtide shopping in the Avenue of Trade and come home with her hands full of bags of all kinds and sizes.
[you can add the shoppinglist to your sheet using the shoppingfeature]”
  • “Magdalena Spends the entire Trading tide…” Well you get the idea, I’m just being a stickler for details as usual, but there’re a coupla’ grammatical errors like that, lot’s of things which are two words that don’t have a hyphen or a space that should. Maybe that’s just a system or maybe that’s just an accident; I say just run it through M$ Word’s Spell/Grammar check and you’ll be fine. I won’t go through and point out everything –that’s unfair and would take a long time ^.^

You should have a GW for this site already. You’ve been around awhile and I know this site in particular has gotten a few critiques in the past and you’ve just blown me away this time. So either you listened and watched, or you figured it out on your own and put in the time and elbow grease required to make a good site and a good site successful, I just hope others agree with me.

Good job,
Remmy.

I coulda sworn I reviewed this, but I uh, don't see the post. Perhaps senility . . .

Of course, it's a wonderful site. It's clean, and efficient, and pretty.

My usual. Tell me what it is on the front page, or as a visitor, I probably won't stick around to check it out, no matter how pretty it is. I just like a short statement saying "Such and such is a roleplaying game in the created world of Bibbledy Bop, using the rules you can find here. We use forum boards (or mail groups or whatever) for playing. yadda yadda."

Moving on to content: watch your puncuation and grammar! Lack of capitalization in the first word of a sentence, run on sentences, and mistakes like using your for you're make a site look unprofessional. Remember, spell check is just a tool, and cannot replace old fashioned eyeballing.

The rules are well laid out, easy to read and follow, and seem to cover everything. Excellent.

Likewise for Character Creation but turning your 'see this for more details' into links would be a nice touch.

The Forums are excellent. A short scroll on the first page; always a joy, and boy, are they well filled out!

Running quickly through the rest of the content, I find it to be uniformly excellent. If only every game were so well set up!

I agree with Remmy. I'll modify your site listing to reflect the GW and you may place the award on your site. Pick it up here.

*dances* thank you guys!

Sorry for not replying sooner, I was away due to an acute appendix Regular Wink I will make sure to put your comments in my to do list. Tazlure is never finished.

Over the course of the last year and a half we've changed Tazlure considerable. Like many PBP's we've had to deal with a drop in players and moderators (the one influencing the other) so we've needed to adjust to a new size dealing with these challenges. With the help of a significant reduction of forums and moving away from "dead content" by making a huge time jump forward, we have now succesfully revitalized the site, though we are still struggling to find new stories in an environment that is now so new to us, strange though that might sound since it was so wished for! Also, it is the quiet season. January/February always are the slowest of the year. Even summer is more active. Still, I can see the dawning of a new era.

We also grew so large in content after running for 6,5 years that we had to find alternative ways to list our information. This is where our wiki comes in and it is a godsend. For one thing the entire community can now help to file information. It is also searchable and you can categorize it any way you want.

This is one great site, it is utterly and totally immersive with convenient character sheets to bolster playing. Tazlure is a complex thread of inter-connecting stories. When you play you really feel like you are part of a world. At times it could be very overwhelming for the newcomer, but a solid support staff tends to keep that under wraps.

Excellent immersive play by post
